Trevor Sargent T.D., who was elected Leader of the Green Party at a special Leadership Convention in Kilkenny on October 6th, 2001 has been a member of the Green Party since 1982 and a T.D. since 1992.

A committed environmentalist since the early 1980s, he realised that many pressing social issues were also linked to environmental problems at local, national and international level. Trevor eventually found a vehicle for his environmental and political philosophy by joining the Ecology Party (as the Green Party / Comhaontas Glas was then called) through the Cork Green Movement, while teaching in Dunmanway, West Cork in 1982.

However, it was 1989 before the Greens started to make any concerted impact on Irish politics with the election of Roger Garland (Dublin South) to Dáil Eireann in 1989. That same year Trevor Sargent outpolled Mary Harney in the European elections collecting 8.3% of the Dublin vote. Within two years, June 1991, he was elected to Dublin County Council and a year later, in November 1992, he was elected to Dáil Eireann as T.D. for Dublin North.

Elected to Dublin County Council in 1991 he immediately set about provoking investigation into rezoning decisions where bribery was suspected. He is renowned for waving an anonymous cheque he received in the post around the Council chamber. When he inquired if any other councillors had received similar cheques he was assaulted. The incident received widespread media coverage and started an investigation which eventually led to the setting up of the planning tribunals.

The following year in November 1992 he was elected to Dáil Eireann and subsequently resigned his Fingal County Council seat in line with Green Party policy on dual mandates. His replacement was elected from Green Party membership in the same Balbriggan ward. At Dáil level he is highly regarded for his consistent contributions to debates and is a member of two Dáil Committees -Public Enterprise
