PR Blog - December
9 months agoDecember was a pretty good month for the PR team! We'd been in contact with Raidió na Gaeltachta for a while when, finally, we managed to get a spot on "iCulb" or iglub as Keith aptly named it. Do we had to get a lift out to Casla, one of the remotest places I've ever been, there was actually like, two houses to be seen in the whole place! So after a few minutes trying to work the revolving door, we got inside and met Jo, the presenter. She briefed us on what was going to happen and we ran through the questions we'd be asked. Some time later, we were LIVE on R na G, and all went according to plan, other than the mention of the "Soup Song" *shudder*! So that was on the Friday and the next day we had our Battle of The Bands, which if you ask me went very well!
We had a poster campaign going, with two styles of poster, both very eye-catching, up around town. On the day, myself my assistant and a random friend of our we found on the street, went about town promoting the gig and handing out flyers, which surprisingly brought quite a few people in! the Guest judges. well, what can i say, they did a brilliant job, were very kind about the whole thing and only demanded a Long-Haired White cat! (no joke) So a big THANK YOU is going out to Paula and SuperKev! WOO! all in all, the PR Team got the word of the gig out to the people and did it in style! thats all for now, more later?
Events and Promotions - December
9 months agoWell this month has been the busiest so far and it has been great. We had to organise the Battle of the Bands and find different ways to promote it.
We decided on the 15th of December after a lot of thought because it wasnt clashing with any gigs and people were avaliable and the next saturday was too close to christmas for us. The time would be in the day so we could hold it in the Roisin Dubh which was a great venue for it. It started at 1 and we had the venue till 5. There was a bit of a clash between our gig and the Claire gig but it all git sorted in the end.
There was a PA system and a PA man in the roisin covered with the cost of the venue. There were lights and a stage too. The gig was delayed by about 10 min because the stamper was lost but that was the biggest problem we had.
We promoted the gig with flyers at all the popular lunch places for the secodary school students as they are the main target market. We put up posters all around Galway in all the different shops and schools. We handed out flyers in town too.
So over all for us this month was a success and we had a great time over the last 3 months :D

A & R - December
9 months agoFor this month we were to get bands to compete in battle of the bands and guest bands to play while the judges were decidin the winner.
We managed to get 6 bands to confirm before the gig and all was goin well. We were still struggling for guest bands beecause although loads were interested they all fell through last minute.
The day before the gig we found out that not only one but two bands had dropped out!! All the staff spent the day ringing any bands available but it was too short notice so the gig had to go ahead with 4 bands. This meant another guest band would be needed. We managed to get on e the day of the gig and everything fell into place.
In the end 4 bands competed..FunkyMonks, Benefits, Midway and Cubists. The y were all great and got the crowd going. The guests that performed were Thomas Mc Partlan and Rachel Brown who both played acoustic guitar brilliantly. We were very greatful for them to come!
In the end Midway won and it was great!! We learned a lot after the 3 gigs and had a great time!!

Photographer and Video Crew - December
9 months agoThis month we aimed to...
1. Take photos of meetings and outings of Killer Riff Records.
2. Photograph the Battle of the Bands and all the bands performing live in the Roisin Dubh.
3. Video each band performing their own original songs live.
4. To create a video of the module and everything we got up to to this date.
We took photos of the meetings and got a group picture of all the staff. We took pictures of the meetings and the trip to Casla for Raidio na Gaeltachta.
We got loads of pictures of the gig and edited them and gave them good effects. We successfully got pictures of each band playing live.
We filmed each band performing unfortunatly the sound quality isnt great because of the way the speakers are set up on stage...but we still have all the bands performing and the y are up on youtube.com if you search Killer Riff Records.
We are currently putting together all the photos, videos, songs and us live on radio talking about Blastbeat. It will be complete and uploaded in the next few days so keep and eye out!! :D:D

RnaG
9 months agoWell basically since Killer Riff Records are from Galway we decided since the west is known for its irish and a few members of the band speak fluent irish that we should reach the gaeltacht areas by telling them about blastbeat and the battle of the bands gig on the 15th.
It all started when we got the number and rang them up. The woman said they dont have many teenage shows but shell see. A few days later and they had given us a 5 to 10 minute slot on Friday the 14th of December on iClub presented by jo.
After a long journey through county Galway we got to a small town called Casla where the radio station was. When we got there we spoke to jo and she told us basically what she would be asking us. We got about a half an hour to get ready and then at 5.45 we were talkin live on RnaG!! We spoke about what blastbeat was and how it was set up..how many people take part in it and how it is all around the world..we mentioned the website and most impotantly at the end we got to plug the gig in the Roisin on the 15th!!
All went really well and thanks to Raidio na Gaeltachta and jo for havin us on iClub.

November Killer Riff Records!
10 months agoAt the start of this month we decided that we had two months till the end of the module and we could pull off another gig. We decided it wouldnt be BOTB it would be just a gig to create a fan base for the bands and get regular customers and to see whos buying tickets. This also helped us decide who we will be picking as the 6 bands to represent us for the BOTB.
We held this gig in the Warwick which has a big hall and we had to fill it. We love a challenge. We chose the 11th because this left us with loads of time to plan the BOTB after. We had a bit of a shakey start because after booking the venue we had a week off mid term break and people were away and we couldnt hold our weekly meeting. The next week back at school we got back to work and really pulled it off. It was great to see everyone working and putting effort in and we could really see the results.
At the gig our mentor, Jonathan Pearsons, came and talked to us and he was a great help and he answered all our questions that we needed answered. We completed our business plan and everything went so well. We learned that if we all work as a team it all works out. If one job gets delayed every job will. So we all work hard to stay on track. We have finished the PR Plan and
Now after the gig we have been planning BOTB. Its going to be UNREAL! It will be held in the Roisin Dubh on the 15th of December from 1 - 5. We are working hard to make it the BEST BOTB EVER!!

10 months agoThis month i was working at the gig in th Warwick. I had to do the sound checks work with the PA and make sure we had all the right equipment that was needed.
Firstly people built the stage and i taped down the edges to make it safe. The stage was quite small so i had to rearrange everything to make as much room for the bands as possible. We had some difficulties with the sound but in the end it was okay. The sound checks had to be done quickly but we managed to get them done. There were lights in the Warwick which i worked out and throughout the gig was changing the lights giving the room a cool effect. I put stickers on everyones equipment and made sure everything was safe. I kept on track where each amp and speaker was at all times. Some of the equipment cam late which delayed us a bit but by the end we were on time. I put posters around telling people where they could buy the CD. There were posters for the staff with the line up of the bands. I made sure there was free water for people somewhere in the hall. During the change over i played the blast:beat vol.5 CD. From the start to the end the gig ran smoothly. It was great!

Events and Promotions - November
10 months agoOkay so this month has been pretty busy!
Our goal was to put on a second gig, in the Warrick, and of course for it to be succesful.
Right, so at first I thought that our second gig would be alot less stressful, however I found it quite the opposite! Firstly we had to book the venue which wasn't too difficult, then we had to confirm the bands. This, like for our last gig, was a bit tricky because there were a few bands that weren't quite sure if they would play or not so it took longer than I thought it would. In the end though we got Funky Munks, Midway, Legion, Negative, Cubists and Indognation, which supplied a varied mix of genres.
Next we had to work closely with the art people to make out tickets and posters. The art guys put loads of effort into their design and it turned out really cool-looking. In the printing place though we ran into a few problems such as fitting everything on the tickets and stuff like that. We got it sorted in the end though and the tickets and the posters turned out really good.
For the next week we told everybody about the gig, put up posters all around town and pre-sold some tickets. I found it more difficult than I thought it would be to sell tickets before-hand, but we sold quite a few and the turn out looked promising.
Everything was running smoothly until the day before the gig which was so so stressful. We didn't find a sound guy til last minute and then we found out that we needed to bring loads of amps and mics! Of course hardly anyone would have the type we needed so I had to make some really last-minute calls to get everything sorted. Thankfully everything was ok in the end and the day itself came around.
Again we ran into some more problems when the bands arrived. A couple of bands came late so a good few couldn't sound check. Also one band in particular brought their own amps to use, and they wouldn't let anybody else use them so there was a bit of drama going on! Being they had to change over their amps the band had less time to play so they weren't happy...but they were grand in the end =) Loads of people turned up and everybody had a great time and we made a good profit!
All of what happened this month has really taught me how unpredictable things can be, and its made me realise that alot of the time you have to work under alot of pressure and not let it affect you, which I found quite hard but I think I'm much more able to handle it now after putting on this gig. Hopefully now the Battle of the Bands final will go according to plan!

A & R - November
10 months agoWith the upcoming gigs on the 11th of November and the 15th of December, there was alot of work to be done. Darragh and I aimed to gather some talented bands together the play in the warick on the 11th. We had aimed to fo this by means of bebo, txting, e-mails and blastspace. We wanted to get new bands, that we hadent heard before, and used blastspace, bebo and word of mouth to dothis. Also this month, we have begun scouting our pick or bands for the Battle or the Bands gig to be held on the 15th of December in the Roisin Dubh in Galway, with a few bands having already confirmed!!
espite the slight technical difficulties we experienced at the Warick, the gig ran quite smoothly, and that includes the bands. They were all very friendly and helpful and really enjoyed playing the gig. One or two of the bands couldnt play that gig but the told us and good while in advance so it could easily be sorted out. we had no communication problems either.
In the end. Darragh and I had managed to get 6 bands together for the gig in the Warick. There was a good mix of music tastes to be heard and the crowd seemed to enjoy it the gig on a whole. We managed to make friends with the bands and establish good links which we hope will help us in rounding up.

Photographer and Video Crew - November
10 months agoSo this month we had a few aims..
To take photos at the gig of the bands and the crowd.
To record videos of the gig and the bands playing.
To edit more of our footage for our video of the module.
At the gig we had two photographers at either side of the hall with cameras which also could record videos and someone in the crowd getting pictures of the crowd and all the staff. We took loads of pictures all to be seen in the 'Warwick' folder of photos on this blastspace.
We ran into a problem when we were editing the videos we realised the sound was bad because there was a speaker too close to the camera. We have managed to get enough clips to edit in to the video we are making of the entire module.
In the end we have loads of pictures of all the staff, the crowd and all the bands at the gig. We got loads of footage for the video and all in all it was a very good month.

Finance Blog - November
10 months agoThis month we held a large gig in the warwick. In preparation for this i withdrew money from our bank account to pay for the expenses of the gig. As people needed the money for posters and tickets I gave it to them aswel as collecting money gained from ticket sales. I lodged some of the money before the gig but also brought some with me to use as change for the cloak room, ticket sales and CD sales. On the day I was very busy in the ticket booth selling tickets, counting money and also sorting out the payment of "The Warwick" and also the PA assistant.
After the gig I sorted out all the money made and wrote out all the relevant accounts like the profit and loss for the gig. I lodged all the money in the bank account.
Also this month i wrote up the analysed cash book for november and balanced it.

Review - Gig in The Warwick, 11th November
10 months agoSo,this is a review for a gig we had in the Warrick on the 11th of November.
So, at first I thought, oh Jesus, No-One else has shown up! But after the first, ten minutes the place started to fill up pretty fast! The first guys to take to the stage were the Cubists, who were great with a really different sound to the usual "BOTB" type! Unfortunately they had to leave early because of prior engagements. The next people on the chopping block were The Funky Monks from Headford, who I've actually got to say THANK YOU! to for coming in a such short notice! They too had a really different, funky sound. They also had a violin
in the band and a sax for a song which personally i think is great and added a bit of twist to the normal mix of a band. Next up we had Midway, who, although playing mostly covers, REALLY got the crowd
going! they did some covers of The Fratelli's which, personally, I loved! Then came Legion, as is the case with the next two bands, they weren't my taste in music, but even I thought they were class! Though
I couldn't make out the words, as such, i did like their stuff! Second from the end were Negative, who, as above, were pretty good, i can't say I'd buy their CD but i though they had a really great stage presence and they really worked the crowd! The last band up was
Indognation, we had some debate over the spelling of that for the posters but thats the final verdict! So despite being last, they had a really cool buzz, a vibe that was infectious and had everyone, in the
words of Aimee "jumpin' around like a mong!" Although I had to spend some time "back-stage" as it were, loved all the bands and thought they were all above the standard I'd been expecting! As a gig, and with a entirely unbiased opinion, I'd give it a 4/5, no scratch that a
5/5!

Production Manager at the Charity Gig
11 months agoso far we've had 1 gig. it was a charity gig held in the Gaf on the 20th of October and in my personal opinion it was "good craic"!! so heres pretty much what I had to do to prepare for the gig, firstly i had to go to the Gaf and ask them what kind of equipment they already had there, they had a few amps and a PA system so that was fair enough! then I had to go back to our A&R manager, Aimee, and tell her what the bands need to bring so that was pretty much sorted! of course before the gig, we had a number of meetings to make sure everyone knew what they were doing and everything was running smoothly which it was! so then the day of the gig came, we all came a few hours early of course! nice and organised! so my first job was to bring the drumkit and the amps downstairs which I got help with of course! then there was the putting together of the equipment and the setting up of the PA system which didnt take long and then we were ready to go! there were no problems throughout the gig so it was all good! check out the killer-riff records page and watch out for events we'll be holding!

Art and Design Team Monthly Update!
11 months agoWhen me and Jackie were selcted for the Art and Design team we launched straight into work. We started off by brainstorming and sketching. Our aim was to create a simple yet effective logo for Killer Riff Records. We came up with a few main ideas, but narrowed them down and merged them into one simple logo.
When we started out, we knew this logo would be on every flyer, poster blastspace and bebo profile. It would have to look the exact same all the time. We agreed we would take our ideas to the computer and finish them using Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite. We came up with the idea of using a well known image of a music equalizer, and heart rate monitor, in conjuction with a sharp striking font. We thought the image and the font complimented each other. Everyone on the blast:beat crew was pleased with the end result, and we were too.
Our next project was to design a poster and flyer, promoting our first gig; in aid of MyLife charity in Africa. This was more a lot difficult than the logo. We used the same approach; brainstorming, development of idea and then completing the poster on the computer with Photoshop.
As with the logo, we wanted to keep this simple, yet effective, informative and eye-catching. We were give some information that needed to be included on the poster such as, venue, list of bands and prices and so on. We drew out a prototype of the poster. The next step was to design a subtle background for the text to sit on. A simple, repeating black and white pattern is what we agreed on using. The text and logo fell into place and the end result was as we wanted; a clear informative poster, which was ready 10 days prior to the gig, giving us plenty of time to advertise it.
Over the month we attended weekly blast:beat meetings and we met regularly with both CEO and assistant CEO to update them on our progress for upcoming projects.

Events Manager/Promoter
11 months agoAs Event Manager/Promoter I've had a difficult enough job really! It's been really enjoyable so far though I gotta say, and it's been fairly more complex than I thought at first.
Our aim was really to just put on brilliant gigs! To find the venues and to promote the gigs around Galway with the help of our online promoter and our PR team. We have to also check what equipment is needed at the venue and what time would be a good start time. We need to make sure we have security too.
The assistant Event Manager/promoter Shauna and I also had to make sure that any gig we put on wasn't and won't collide with any other youth gigs on in Galway, so nobody looses out that way.
For our first gig, we went to the gaf a couple of weeks in advance to book the place for the 20th of October, which wasn't a problem, it was fairly simple and the staff that worked there were nice and helpful. Our plan was to ave a charity gig in order to raise money for the My Life charity.
Shauna and I had to work closely with Aimee and Dara who are the A@R managers, in order to confirm the bands that were playing so we could report back to the gaf so they'd know how long we'd need the venue for. This I found to be the most difficult aspect really, as several bands weren't giving us a definite answer on whether they could play or not so it was fairly stressful! In the end however, Space Monkey, Oak, Midway and myself played. The gig lasted for about 2 hours and was enjoyed by all. In the end we raised about 160euro, with many people donating more than just the 2 euro entry fee!
This is mainly what we've done so far, however we've got another gig coming up shortly! We have already booked the Warwick for the 11th of November and our planning the rest of the details now.
Emma Van Der Putten and Shauna O Connor,
Events Manager/Promoter Team.
Video Crew Monthly Update!
11 months agoWhen we were told that we had gotton to be part of the video crew we got straight to work to find out what was involved. We aimed to film some of the meetings and film the bands play at the charity gig at the 20th of October.
We ran into difficulty when we could only have the use of one video camera for free. We wanted to have to cameras for two different angles so we could play around with the editing later. We decided one video camera was enough for the meetings and we tried to source one for the gig. Luckily we did just in time!
At the gig we set up the two video cameras on either side of the stage for the different angles. We got all the footage we needed for this month and we look forward to making a music video for next month! We plan on filming the next interview we have too.
Eddie Mullarkey and Adam Killeen,
Video Crew.
PR Monthly Update!
11 months agoOnce we were given our staff positions as thr PR team Eimear Coogan and I were told by the fantastic Zoe, that we "need to contact the local press" and off we set with big idea's of full page spreads and half hour interviews on the radio. However, i was quickly brought down to earth!
It started out well, i had the name's of a good few people in the press and a handful of contacts too, but most of these fell through or just didn't work. After the article in the paper falling through (because of lack of communication) most of our plans were screwed. But things started looking up when someone gave the the name of a Fifth year, called Dara O'Brian, who was really helpful. He gave me the number for the office for Flirt FM(the college radio station)and said to ask for Paula. We gave her a shout and she too was really helpful. She said we could call up to the station and time. So Eimear Coogan, our journalist Eoin Kelly stand in photographer Shauna O'Connor(also the assistant Promoter/Event Manager ) and I headed up to the college. When we got there Paula let us take some photo's in the recording studio's and around the building. We then got down to business, and recorded our piece, which was about five minutes long. We got to explain what blastbeat was and all the different things we do but most importantly we got to plug pur charity gig on the 20th of October. After about twenty minutes of recommendations and comparisons we said goodbye to Paula and Flirt and we made our way back to the school while we looked at the ridiculous photo's we'd taken (which can be seen on the company page) All in all, it went well and was a pretty good day!
More to come once we get to the newspapers!! You havent seen or heard the last of Kilelr Riff Records in the local Galway press!
James Mooney and Eimear Coogan,
PR Team.
Finance Monthly Update!
11 months agoAfter the blastbeat program was shown to us at the meeting, the people who were looking for the job of ceo were interviewed. After the ceo and assistant ceo were chosen the two of them held interviews to pick the people for the rest of the jobs. I was very happy to be chosen as finance manager.
Once everyone knew their jobs the ceos held a meeting to let everyone know what had to be done for the month of October. I was told that it would be my job to open a bank account for the company, keep track of all money transactions and also to plan a budget and forecast for the months income and expenditure.
The first thing I did was to organise an income to get the business up and running. The ceos and I decided that share capital was th best way of doing this. It was decided that each member of the management and assistants would pay E10 towards the company. This was dfficult to begin with but eventually everyone brought in the E10.
I lodged all the money in the new bank account I had set up with Bank of Ireland.
Once is was planned for KillerRiffRecords to have a charity gig i started to forecast what money would be involved. As all equipment, venues and entertainment for the gig was free i only set aside E10 for miscellenious things. In the end only E6 was spent on the photocopying of posters to promote the gig.
After the gig all the profits made for charity were lodged in the bank aswell as money made from selling the cds we recieved from blastbeat.
Also during October I have started planning ahead to the business plan. I have started to estimate with the sales and marketing team what income and expenditure will be according to what they are planning to sell.

Finance Manager.
Interview with Oak - Eoin Kelly
11 months agoEK: Hey guys, how bout you first introduce yourselves?
Eddie Mullarkey: Hi, I’m Eddie and I play guitar in Oak.
Patrick Oliver: Hi, I’m Patrick and I’m the drummer in Oak.
Gordon Clarke: Hey, I’m Gordon and I play bass in Oak.
Liam o’Hare: And I’m Liam, I sing in Oak.
EK: Nice to meet ye guys. So how did ye start the band?
Eddie: About 10 months ago me and a few of the lads were talking. We found out what instruments each other played and to start a band just seemed like the right thing to do!
Gordon: Yeah it was pretty much like “well I play bass and you play guitar… why not make a band”!
EK: Cool. So what are the aspirations for Oak?
Liam: I guess we’ll see how we go down with crowds playing gigs. And if people like us, who knows!
Gordon: Yeah, as long as we get a fan base then the sky’s the limit!
Patrick: So I guess you could say we’re aspiring to save the world with our music!
EK: Do you guys write your own material or cover songs?
Liam: At gigs we’ve only done cover songs so far. But we hope to start writing material soon enough.
EK: Who are your biggest influences?
Eddie: Well at gigs we’ve been covering Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Muse and the likes so I suppose they’d be some of our influences…but we also take from AC/DC, Pink Floyd and System of a Down.
EK: And do you plan on recording your material once it’s written?
Patrick: Definetly. Eddie basically has a recording studio at his house!
Eddie: Ah come on, it’s less a studio, more a computer. (laughs)
Gordon: But whatever it is Eddie has, we do plan on recording on it.
EK: You guys are involved with Blast Beat, what do you think of it?
Liam: Blast is great! It’s a really good idea. It gets people interested in their local music scene.
Gordon: It’s a brilliant way of promoting bands like us. So we’re totally taking advantage of it.
Patrick: Like, we played at a charity gig in The Gaf last week set up by you lot at Killer Riff Records and it really boosted our fan base! It’s excellent!
EK: Do ye plan to keep using it to help advertise Oak?
Eddie: Yeah, hopefully we’ll be playing at Battle of the Bands in a few weeks which would be great publicity.
Liam: And we might even win it!
EK: Well guys thanks a lot for your time and best of luck in the future!
Oak: Thanks a lot! Bye!
